98.3 TRY Social Dilemma – Cousin doing a cover after paying for my meal

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s 98.3 TRY social dilemma comes from Peter and it’s a problem with one of his cousins. Here is his email.

Hi Jaime. I had a problem recently with one of my cousins and I hope you can help me solve this dilemma. I recently left the state to attend a funeral. While I was there I hung out with my family and my cousin offered to buy my meal. I kept it cheap and only ordered a bowl of pasta and a glass of wine. My dinner came to $40 plus tip…so at most $48. I got home the next day and two days later my cousin’s wife sent me a bill for $180!!!!! She said my cousin drank too much and didn’t realize he was paying for the whole family. I know he was sober…he didn’t drink at all during dinner and he only paid for my meal and his meal. There were eight other people there who all paid for their own meals. I try to reach my cousin but no answer. Should I send them money because maybe they have money problems and my cousin wouldn’t tell? Or should I explain what happened and just send them my $48? What would you do? Help me. Thanks a lot.

I understand wanting to help the family if they have money problems, but this all seems a bit fishy to me. I certainly wouldn’t send the full $180. I would probably send the $48 and stick with it, and keep trying to get in touch with my cousin.

What would you do? Would you throw your cousin under the bus with his wife? Let’s help Peter and let me know on TRY’s Facebook page.
