98.3 TRY Social Dilemma – Is it appropriate for children to watch their brother being born

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s 98.3 TRY social dilemma came from Joyce, and it deals with her stepdaughter’s pregnancy. Here is his email.

Jaime, I have a real problem with my son and his wife. My daughter-in-law is pregnant and she has decided to give birth at home. I’m uncomfortable with this, but I know I have no say. But now my son has told me that his wife wants their 9 year old daughter and 7 year old son in the bedroom at home to watch their new brother being born. The kids think it will be “cool”. My STRYon is on the fence not knowing if this will scare the kids. His wife thinks it’s a great idea. Well, I’m not a fan of home births, but I’m definitely not a fan of the kids in the room. So many things are happening and could go wrong. Even if everything is going well, why do children have to see and hear all this. How can I explain to my son how important it is to not leave the children in this room. I hope you and your listeners can help me. Thanks a lot.

Wow, well, I will say this, seeing my niece born was one of, if not THE most beautiful, things I have ever seen. I don’t think I would leave kids that young in the room just because it might be scary due to childbirth etc. That’s my view though… I would expect them to be a bit older.
