98.3 TRY Social dilemma – Is it appropriate to use the loudspeaker on a personal call?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s 98.3 TRY social dilemma came from Grace and it’s all about phone etiquette. Here is his email:

Hi Jaime. Here is my dilemma. I will never understand people who don’t care that others can hear their phone conversations. For example, my colleague in her twenties will be constantly on the phone when she has lunch in the break room. That’s fine and all, but she usually has the conversation on speakerphone. Not only does she not care that she’s bothering everyone in the room with the noise, but she doesn’t seem to care that we’re all hearing her personal stuff now. Once I kindly asked him to at least use a headset to talk on the phone, but nothing changed. I can’t be the only one bothered by this. I don’t want to get him in trouble with the bosses, but I don’t know what else to do. How would you handle it? Am I wrong to think that this behavior is inappropriate? Thanks a lot.

~ Grace

Well, I find that A LOT of people are talking on their speaker now… not just the younger ones. It is driving me crazy. I was somewhere and a woman was fighting with her credit card company while she was on speakerphone. When did it become a thing? I can’t imagine anyone wanting to hear my conversations, so why do a lot of people think it’s okay.

What would you do in this situation? I think I would ask again. And I would ask other colleagues if they noticed it, and then I would talk to him completely. I wouldn’t want to go see the boss.

What do you think? Let me know on the TRY the Facebook page.
