98.3 TRY Social dilemma – Should the whole family eat gluten free if mum has to?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s 98.3 TRY social dilemma came from Bobby and he’s having trouble at home. Here is his email:

Hi Jaime. My wife recently discovered she has gluten intolerance, and now our whole family has it. Instead of just buying her own separate food that she can eat, she decided that the whole house should now be gluten-free, so she threw out all the bread, cookies, cakes, etc., and replaced them with gluten-free options, which do not. tastes exactly good. I try to be supportive but me and the children are miserable. So yesterday I decided to go shopping on my own and secretly bought the good stuff and hid it, hoping my wife wouldn’t find it. Unfortunately my youngest child is only five and spilled the beans but luckily I caught her before she threw anything and told her she had to stop torturing us just because that she can’t have gluten. Well, now she’s mad, claiming I’m selfish and not supporting her. But am I really wrong? I mean, why can’t we have both in the house? How should I have handled it? Thanks

~Bobby

Wow, well, I think Bobby’s wife isn’t fair to the family. I have dietary restrictions, but I would never impose them on my family. And I don’t think Bobby’s wife should either. BUT I think Bobby should help out in the kitchen if he isn’t already, especially if there are now two meals that now need to be cooked.

What do you think? Let’s help out Bobby and let me know what you think about the TRY the Facebook page.
