98.3 TRY Social Dilemma – Should you help clean up if you’re at a party?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s 98.3 TRY social dilemma came from Bonnie and it’s all about parties and barbecues. Here is his email.

Hi Jaime. Went to a friend’s house for a party and BBQ recently. It was fun, there were about 20 people and we all had a great time. But here is the weird thing that happened. The party ended around 9-9:30 a.m. We had been there for 2 hours. As some of us were getting ready to leave, the party hostess said it was time to start cleaning up and gave each of us a job to do. Some were asked to put the food away, others to stack the dishwasher, others to wash their own dishes, etc. I was really upset by this. When I host a party, I would NEVER expect my guests to stay and help clean up, but this friend of mine expected exactly that. I was offended, I really was. Other friends thought it was good. What do you think? Is it appropriate… requiring guests to stay and clean up after a party or BBQ? Help me understand this. Thanks.

~Bonnie

I don’t mind helping clean up. I know what it’s like to throw a party, so if anyone wants to help out, I’m all for it, but I don’t think I’d ever demand people help me. That seems a bit much. But I would always offer to help, that’s for sure.

What do you think? Is it okay to ask people to stay and help clean up after a party, or is that overkill? Let’s help Bonnie and keep me posted on the TRY Facebook page.
