If you win the 50/50 raffle at a charity event, do you return the $$?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Jake, and it’s all about winning and charity. Here is his email:

Hey Jaime, I have a dilemma. I was at a charity event this weekend having a great time with my family. Of course, when it came time to buy 50/50 raffle tickets, I bought at arm’s length. I was happy to do it. It’s a fun way to donate with a chance to win something. Well, at drawing time, I won! My wife was so excited because we won $480! That’s more than I’ve ever won in a 50/50 before, but it was a big event. Anyway, after we collected our winnings, a friend of mine came over and said, you’re going to return that money, right? I hadn’t even thought of that. Is it a thing? He said yes. But on the other side of me, my wife was saying we should keep the money because that’s how the charity thanks us for supporting them. I didn’t know what to do, but suddenly I felt like everyone was expecting me to return the money, so I gathered my family and we left. Is there a protocol for winning a charity 50/50 raffle. Are you supposed to return it? Should it be kept? Help me here. If I had to give it back, I can always do it. Thanks very much

~ James

I think Jake should be able to keep his money if that’s what he chooses, without any shame. And you don’t have to “wait” for it to come back. I will say that when I won a 50/50 at a charity event, I gave away some of it, but it wasn’t planned. At least, I didn’t think so.

What do you think? Let’s help Jake and let me know about the TRY the Facebook page
