Should you let the kids win when you play a game with them?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s TRY 98.3 social dilemma is playing games with your family. Here is the mail :

Hi Jaime, my name is Justin and I am married with three children and now a homemaker like many other parents. Like many of us, I spend a lot of my day finding new and exciting ways to keep my kids and myself busy. We have all the standard board games available at all times and we also like to play checkers and chess. Now my kids are 5, 7 and 10 and I play games with each of them individually and never let them win which really annoys my wife. She thinks I should let them beat checkers and Connect 4 mainly, but I tell her that if I let them fight they will never learn how to win. My 10 year old son likes to play chess with me and he beat me the other night. If I let him win all the time, he would never improve and beat me on his own. Do you agree with me not to let my children win at any board game? Or should I let them win from time to time? Thank you.

I have to admit that I have occasionally let my nieces and nephews win a game or two. But I also won matches. I want them to learn, but I also don’t want them to lose confidence by never winning.
