Is it OK to serve alcohol to adults at a children’s party?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Today’s 98.3 TRY social dilemma is about kids’ parties and what’s appropriate. Here is the email I received:

Hello Jaime. I have a question. I am having a birthday party for my 6 year old daughter next week and have invited all the kids in her class and their parents. We’re doing it at the community center at my mom’s apartment and I think it’s going to be great. Now I planned to make cocktails for the parents, just beer and wine. My sister said she didn’t think parents would drink because they might feel a little embarrassed drinking at a child’s birthday party. Now I only have one child, and this is my first party, so maybe I’m a little off etiquette, but when I go to the birthday party of a child, I always wish there were drinks offered to the parents. One, no more. Do you think it’s okay to have alcohol at a kid’s party? Thank you very much Jaime

It’s interesting. I’ve been to lots of children’s parties over the years, some drank alcohol, some didn’t. I will say this. Those who drink alcohol usually end up having one or two people who have a little too much and it becomes uncomfortable. That’s my experience anyway. So I say no booze at a kid’s party.
